Season 2021
In the project’s pilot season, a survey of the tomb was undertaken in order to gain an overview of the structure, its current condition, and to a develop a work strategy for future seasons. This survey identified many objects associated with TT 217 and first described by Norman de Garis Davies in 1927. Among these finds were three wooden boxes in room IX that contain almost 1000 decorated wall fragments mainly from the chapel. In addition, 50 fragments of two life-size plastered and painted muna statues for Ipuy and his wife were discovered. These statues stood in the chapel by the door in the west wall. During work in the Carter magazine, further objects belonging to TT 217 or which refer to Ipuy and his family were identified: a door jamb and three stone fragments with reliefs.
The team took high-resolution photos of all the currently accessible rooms in TT 217 (I, II, III, IV, VI, VII, IX), close-ups of the chapel and its remarkable decorations, as well as all the wall and statue fragments. Additionally, a draft 3D model of the chapel was created which will allow for the digital relocation of wall fragments in the coming years.
The season was kindly funded by the Freiwillige Akademische Gesellschaft (FAG) Basel and the University of Basel.
